BYD has released its September 2024 sales figures, showcasing its best month of sales in the company’s history – 419,426 New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), including a mixture of BEVs and PHEVs.

During August the company sold 373,083 NEVs which makes September’s sales 12.4% above the previous month.

A breakdown of the sales was shared by the Chinese EV market analyst Thinkercar on X, which outlined 417,600 passenger NEVs were sold with the bulk of the sales coming from BYD’s PHEV models which made up 252,600 sales.

BEVs made up 165,000 of the sales, falling below 40% of the total sales in September.

BYD’s total sales for the year now stand 2.74 million vehicles  and the company suggests it will easily exceed its 3 million sales for the entire 2023 year by next month.

This is also the first month, that BYD sales have exceeded 400,000 units and set a new benchmark as the company’s global expansion plans move full steam ahead.

Only 12 months ago, monthly sales surpassed 300,000 units for the first time, making the latest sales a significant bump.

One other factor worth noting is the brand’s popularity in international markets which has been growing rapidly. During September BYD export sales were 30,500 units with year-to-date exports getting close to 300,000 sales.

Over recent months, the company has started deliveries of the upgraded Seal sedan in China and the new Sealion 7.

The Sealion 7 uses BYD’s next-generation EV platform, e-Platform 3.0 EVO, which brings new features to the drivetrain including improved motors and charging speeds of up to 240 kW. The improved charging gets the Sealion 7 closer to Tesla’s dual-motor variants of the Model Y.

In Australia by the end of August BYD had delivered over 13,000 NEVs to customers in 2024 which included 11,259 EVs from models including the Atto 3, Dolphin and the Seal. The remaining cars were the recently launched Sealion 6 PHEV model.

With a plug-in hybrid ute next on the cards for the brand in Australia, PHEV sales will also make up a bigger proportion of the brand’s sales in the coming months.
