Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the new ID. Tiguan, a fully electric midsize SUV that will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 in the brand’s growing EV portfolio. Making its world premiere ahead of a market launch scheduled for early 2027, the model combines the familiar Tiguan name with Volkswagen’s latest electric vehicle technology, positioning itself as a key pillar of the company’s future lineup.

The new ID. Tiguan arrives with a completely redesigned appearance that moves away from the softer crossover styling of its predecessors in favor of a more assertive SUV character. Volkswagen says the vehicle adopts its latest “Pure Positive” design language, featuring sharper lines, sculpted surfaces and proportions intended to give it the visual presence of a model from a higher market segment. The company has also reintroduced traditional pull-style door handles, emphasizing usability alongside the cleaner exterior design.

Inside, Volkswagen has focused heavily on perceived quality, digital technology and ease of use. The cabin introduces a new display environment consisting of a 10-inch Digital Cockpit, a 15-inch central infotainment display and, for the first time in a European Volkswagen, an available 12-inch co-driver display. The passenger-side screen allows occupants to access infotainment and gaming functions without distracting the driver thanks to a privacy-mode technology that limits visibility from the driver’s seat.

Volkswagen says customer feedback played a major role in shaping the interior experience. Physical controls return for key vehicle functions, including steering-wheel buttons and climate control operations. The redesigned center console also houses intuitive controls for audio functions, while Qi2-compatible wireless charging pads with integrated magnetic positioning improve smartphone usability.

The ID. Tiguan will be offered in three powertrain configurations. The entry-level model pairs a 58 kWh battery with a 140 kW (190 hp) rear-wheel-drive system. Above it sits a 210 kW (286 hp) rear-wheel-drive version powered by a 77 kWh battery, while the flagship variant combines a 77 kWh battery with a 220 kW (299 hp) dual-motor 4MOTION all-wheel-drive setup. Depending on specification, Volkswagen estimates driving ranges of up to 600 kilometers on the WLTP cycle.

Practicality remains a core focus. The SUV offers seating for five and includes a 32-liter front storage compartment, or “frunk,” alongside a cargo area capable of accommodating up to 534 liters of luggage. Towing capacity reaches up to 2,000 kilograms in models equipped with the larger battery, further strengthening the vehicle’s credentials as a family-oriented electric SUV.

Among the standout technological additions is standard one-pedal driving, allowing drivers to significantly slow the vehicle using the accelerator pedal alone. The new Connected Travel Assist system introduces advanced support features including assisted lane changes on highways and the capability to automatically stop the vehicle at red traffic lights. Optional comfort upgrades include electrically adjustable front seats with massage, memory and ventilation functions, a 480-watt Harman Kardon premium audio system and a panoramic glass roof.

Volkswagen has also developed several practical digital features for everyday use. A Digital Key enables owners to lock, unlock and start the vehicle via a compatible smartphone and share access remotely with family members or friends. The available Vehicle-to-Load adapter allows power to be drawn directly from the vehicle’s battery, enabling users to operate devices ranging from e-bikes to outdoor appliances.

Adding a touch of nostalgia to the high-tech cabin, Volkswagen has introduced optional “Retro” display themes. Activating the feature transforms the digital instrument cluster with graphics inspired by iconic Volkswagen models, while the infotainment system can showcase a virtual garage featuring classics such as the Golf I, Golf II Country, Beetle, first-generation Tiguan and Race Touareg.

Pre-sales for the new ID. Tiguan begin in Germany and several other European markets on October 13, with pricing starting at €42,695.
