March 2-8 is Women in Construction Week, an annual event that celebrates and promotes the role of women in the construction industry. This year’s theme, “Together We Rise,” recognizes the strength and knowledge of women and the essential part they play in shaping the future of the construction industry. FTI is proud to have women in various roles across the organization. Their diverse paths to success highlight the richness of experiences and the power of our shared mission to create world-class opportunities to succeed.
Hear from a few of our many talented women in construction as they share their advice, journey to FTI, sources of inspiration and favorite memories. Their stories truly highlight the power of rising together to Redefine What’s Possible at FTI and in the construction industry — the opportunities for women in the industry are endless.
- Carrie Ludowese, Contracts Manager
- Morgan Nicklaus, Electrical Apprentice III
- Krista Sickler, Senior Project Coordinator
- Dawn Boucher, Vice President – Operational Talent
What advice would you offer to women aiming to succeed in or considering a career in construction?
- Morgan: I always encourage women interested in joining the trades by highlighting that we often excel in this field. Our attention to detail and goal-oriented mindset makes us valuable assets to any team. While we may not match the physical strength of some men on site, our determination and hard work are crucial.
- Carrie: It is important to maintain confidence, even when it does not come naturally. Take opportunities as they arise and actively advocate for yourself. If self-advocacy feels challenging, seek out a mentor who can provide guidance and support.
- Krista: Don’t be afraid to go after what you want. If you put in the work, the result will be worth it! Don’t let society determine what you’re limited to. Live outside the stereotypical box and show the world you can be anything you want.
Can you tell us about your career journey and what led you to join FTI?
- Dawn: I was drawn to FTI because it offered me the chance to gain more exposure to Human Resources at the beginning of my career. Additionally, the construction industry intrigued me, and joining FTI provided an opportunity to learn about a field I knew little about. I didn’t anticipate how much I would come to appreciate the industry, the people, the culture and the core values. I am grateful to have found FTI, where I could start and continue to grow my career.
- Morgan: During my senior year of high school, I discovered my passion for becoming an electrician. I enrolled in the pre-apprenticeship program at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, and I learned about FTI through from a current team member, Gabe Tanguay. By January 2023, I was hired and had the opportunity to start my career.
Who is a woman in construction that inspires you?
- Carrie: Many historical and contemporary women have broken barriers in male-dominated industries, proving that women can excel in construction leadership roles. I am particularly inspired by those who work on-site, demonstrating incredible strength and performing shoulder to shoulder in a traditionally male-dominated environment. Their leadership paves the way for future generations to pursue careers in construction.
- Dawn: There are so many inspiring women in the construction industry and at FTI. My goal is to build relationships with others around me and learn from each of them. Everybody brings a different perspective, strength, background and knowledge, and the more you connect with others, the more you can grow your own perspective and skills.
What are the standout moments that have made your time at FTI memorable and special?
- Krista: I will always remember how FTI supported me during a difficult time when my husband was ill. Thanks to our PTO Donation Program, I was able to take a three-month leave of absence while still receiving income. I am forever grateful to those who contributed. The generosity at FTI is incredible.
- Morgan: One of my favorite memories at FTI is attending the Omaha Storm Chasers game with the team members from my jobsite. We all enjoyed playing cornhole and had a fantastic time. It was a wonderful evening out, providing a break from our normal day-to-day work.
The stories of these women, and all women at FTI and in the construction industry, lay the framework for an exciting future that allows for every team member to thrive. It is important to recognize the impact of women in construction, not just during Women in Construction Week, but year-round to continue to foster the development of our industry and Redefine What’s Possible.
