Two buses damaged due to CNG explosion in Kaduna State

Oborevwori commissions CNG stations in Delta
The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) has reassured the public on the safety of natural gas following a vehicle explosion at a Kaduna motor park on Sunday.

A statement signed by the Head of Brand and Communications, Pi-CNG & EV, Onyekachi Eke, on behalf of management, called for calm as investigations proceed.

The incident, which was reported in the early hours of Sunday at an unspecified motor park, prompted a response from Pi-CNG & EV expressing deep concern and solidarity with those affected.

Eke highlighted years of incident-free CNG use in Nigeria and emphasised its reliability, cost-effectiveness, and air quality benefits.

She said that no cause had been confirmed yet, noting that they were working with state and federal authorities to establish facts.

MEANWHILE, the Delta State Government has taken a significant step toward reducing transportation costs and promoting cleaner energy with the commissioning of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in Asaba and Warri.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, yesterday, unveiled the NIPCO Gas CNG station in Asaba, describing the initiative as a strategic move aimed at easing the financial burden of transportation on residents while advancing the state’s transition to alternative energy.

The project, commissioned simultaneously in Asaba and Warri, is expected to fuel up to 2,000 vehicles daily. Represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, the governor said the stations represent a foundational step in the state’s adoption of CNG technology.

“We have this as a daughter station; one in Warri, and what I may describe as a ‘kindergarten station.’ All of them will dispense gas. If we can fuel about 2,000 vehicles daily, then it is a great leap towards where we are going,” he said.

Oborevwori noted that the state government is open to partnerships and concession arrangements to expand the network of CNG stations across Delta.

He encouraged private investors to key into the initiative, particularly in establishing CNG-powered transport systems.

“We are also open to private investors who want to establish their own CNG buses. We are ready to concession that,” he added. The governor emphasised that while the state has made considerable investments in road infrastructure, reducing the cost of transportation remains a priority.

“The next step is to push down the cost of transportation, and this is a very necessary step,” he stated, adding that the stations would not only dispense gas but also serve as conversion centres for vehicles.
