Earlier today, I wrote about the 8 electric cars that actually saw their sales increase quarter over quarter in the USA in the highly difficult 4th quarter, as well as the 11 electric cars that saw their 4th quarter sales increase year over year. Much more interesting to me, though, are the annual changes in sales. Which models grew their sales in 2025 compared to previous years, and by how much?

This analysis includes almost every EV on the market. Different to how I did it earlier, therefore, I’m including models that were introduced in 2025, and I’m also showing models that were discontinued in 2025. In total, 32 models had higher sales in 2025 than in 2024. Check out the results for 2025 versus 2024 in this first chart below.

Impressive result from the Chevy Equinox EV there leading the sales growth. Granted, the model was introduced in the 2nd quarter of 2024, but still. It’s not until you get to the Honda Prologue that you get another model that wasn’t introduced in 2025, and it was introduced in the 1st quarter of 2024.

On the flip side of the chart, the clear losers were the Tesla Cybertruck and Tesla Model Y. To my unfortunate surprise, my top choice for a new EV, the Kia EV, is 3rd to last. Close to that one, I would just throw a bone to the Cadillac LYRIQ. The model must have suffered from the introduction of the Cadillac OPTIQ right below it in price and the Cadillac VISTIQ above it in price. Overall, though, those models are the reason Cadillac has become the #1 legacy auto brand in terms of percentage of sales being electric.

I’ve got three more comparison charts below, but I won’t spend as much time discussing the leaders in these charts, because it’s really mostly about model introductions. But I’ll add a few notes for each.

Compared to 2023, the Chevy Equinox EV again took the top spot, followed by the Honda Prologue and the Chevy Blazer EV on the podium. The Chevy Bolt, Tesla Model Y, and Tesla Model 3, meanwhile, were the big losers.

Compared to 2022, the Tesla Model Y was up enormously, followed by the Chevy Equinox EV and Honda Prologue again. (Clearly, the Chevy Equinox EV and Honda Prologue have been the top introductions to the market in the past few years.) On the flip side, though, the Chevy Bolt dropped the most (so, part of the Equinox EV’s success was really as a replacement and upgrade on the Bolt). After that, it was the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model 3, and Tesla Model X that led the sales drops. Yikes.

Compared to 2021, going back four whole years, the Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3 top the charts, still showing how far they’ve come, and the Chevy Equinox EV grabbed the bronze. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Honda Prologue then rounded out the top 5. On the bottom end, the Chevy Bolt, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, and Nissan LEAF still “led” the market for the most sales losses. I am confident we’ll see a big bounce back from the LEAF in 2026, but I can’t say the same about those other three models. But we’ll see!
